Theatre In the Raw Presents: THE THREEPENNY OPERA
book and lyrics by BERTOLT BRECHT music by KURT WEILL
A ruthless, biting morality tale, featuring the crimes of the notorious womanizer Mack the Knife, Brecht's landmark work is a showpiece of stunning, unforgettable songs and challenging class critique. First staged in Germany in 1928, this wickedly satirical "opera for beggars" with its ferocious jazz-turned-operetta score and political roots in Weimar cabaret is a masterpiece of black humour. Its themes of redemption and justice and its unique and edgy world of double-crossing gangsters, beggars, prostitutes and corrupt cops are as relevant to urban audiences as ever. November 16th - 27th at THE RUSSIAN HALL (600 Campbell).
THE THREEPENNY OPERA portrays a society turned upon its head with biting critique, and mysterious characters, and the "Raw edge" from Jay Hamburgers colourful production; a classic work of early 20th century theatre and a landmark in musical theatre brought to Vancouver audiences this Fall at the recently renovated Russian Hall in Strathcona.
"...right on point... unique in-your-face approach... intimate and creative" - Vince Kanasoot Georgia Straight
"I especially enjoyed the integrity of this production. It is faithful to text, to context, to the political and fourth-wall-breaking impulse of Brecht and Weill" - Charles Barber, City Opera Vancouver
